The Decalogue describes the LORD visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate him. Deuteronomy 24:16 forbids putting children to death for their fathers, and Ezekiel 18:20 states that the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father.
Matthew 5:17-19 records Jesus saying he came not to destroy the law but to fulfil it, and that not one jot or tittle shall pass from the law. Ephesians 2:15 speaks of the law of commandments contained in ordinances being abolished in his flesh.
Romans 3:28 concludes that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. James 2:24 states that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. The two sentences use the same three key terms and reach opposite-sounding conclusions.
